Secondment as a Service (our own "SaaS" offering)
Introduction
Most legal questions reach outside counsel late. By the time a matter has been packaged into an email, the decision has usually been taken, the sprint has closed, and the advice arrives to confirm or complicate something already in motion. Secondment closes that gap by putting a lawyer inside the business, present in the meetings where decisions are actually made rather than in the correspondence that follows them. We place our lawyers with clients for defined periods — to cover a departure or a parental leave, to carry a team through a funding round, a product launch, or a market entry, or simply because the work has outgrown the people available to do it. The arrangement is scoped by time rather than by matter, and it arrives without headcount, recruitment cycles, or the difficulty of hiring permanently for a need that may last nine months. And yes, the acronym is deliberate.
Our Experience
Our lawyers have embedded with product, commercial, procurement, privacy, and in-house legal teams across technology, media, fintech, gaming, and e-commerce businesses. In practice this means sitting in the stand-up, reading the roadmap before it hardens into a launch date, handling contracts at the volume the business actually generates rather than the volume that gets escalated, and answering the small questions that never justify a formal instruction but compound quietly when nobody answers them.
A secondee arrives as one person and brings the firm. Where a question exceeds the brief — a cross-border transfer structure, a trade mark conflict, a licensing condition, an unusual indemnity — it is routed to the relevant specialist internally rather than researched from first principles at the client's expense. The result is the responsiveness of an in-house lawyer with the bench of an external one.
Placements run from a few weeks to a year or more, full-time or on fixed days each week, on site or remote. We settle conflicts management, privilege, and reporting lines at the outset, so that the position is clear to the client's own team and to its counterparties before anyone needs it to be.
Secondments also improve the advice that comes after them. A lawyer who has spent six months inside a business knows its risk appetite, its approval chains, its release cadence, and the three recurring arguments it has with its largest counterparty. None of that appears in an instruction letter, and all of it makes the next piece of work faster and better aimed.
